life at...40 somethingSKIN REVIVALBy Marina Peredo, M.D. The natural aging process begins in our 20’s when collagen production begins to slow down and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring. Women and men entering their 40’s may begin to notice sagging skin, droopy eyelids, and facial wrinkles that result from intrinsic aging. Over-the-counter products claim they can reduce fine lines, eye puffiness, dark circles and more. The reality is that unless you are working with a miracle cream, results may be minimal and disappointing. Recently, the FDA approved a new facial filler called Perlane®, a sister product of Restylane®. Perlane is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler that is injected into the deep dermis to the superficial layer of the subcutis to add volume, restoring surface contour in facial wrinkles and folds, lip augmentation, facial depressions, and facial scarring. Perlane is primarily the same product as Restylane, but contains a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid (NASHA) gel. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the skin and other tissue, and contains no animal products. Therefore, there is no need for a skin test. The difference between BOTOX® injections and Perlane is that BOTOX relaxes the muscles, which cause many facial lines and unwanted facial expressions and can make you numb. Perlane temporarily fills creases, plumps lips, enhances cheekbones, and corrects acne scars. Sometimes BOTOX injections are used in combination with Perlane® when treating certain areas where permanent deep lines have resulted from over activity of the muscles. Perlane will not work on frown lines on the lower forehead or correct the hollows under the eyes. A dermatologist may suggest using a combination of Perlane and BOTOX to manage specific areas of the face. Depending on the location of treatment, Perlane can last from six months to one year. PERLANE® POINTERS* After the treatment, you may have some redness and swelling. * If you have had outbreaks of herpes, an injection can cause the herpes to return. * In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can cause a large bruise. * To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use Perlane if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. * If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should not use Perlane. * Seek advice about Perlane treatments from a Board Certified dermatologist. * Be aware. Insurance companies do not reimburse for cosmetic procedures. —Peredo |
