Young Women and Heart Disease
by Michelle Levine

The impact of heart disease on women has garnered more attention in past years, but it remains a mystery why heart disease is one of the major causes of death for women under age 55. Also, young women appear to have a much greater risk of dying after a heart attack than men of the same age. To focus on this high-risk group, Yale School of Medicine recently launched the largest, most comprehensive study of young women with heart attacks. With a four-year, $9.7 million National Institutes of Health grant, VIRGO (Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes in Young AMI patients) will study 2,000 women ages 55 and younger with 1,000 men for comparison. There are almost 100 sites nationwide identifying and enrolling women for this groundbreaking study. To learn more, you can go to virgostudy.com.
